This project in 20 seconds
This garden in Maidstone was completely redesigned to create a modern, family-friendly outdoor space.
Our team introduced a raised timber deck with rendered planters, sweeping lawn curves, a feature paved circle, and vertical timber posts for structure and style.
The combination of natural materials and bold design lines has turned the garden into a versatile space that feels both inviting and contemporary.
From tired plot to bold design
The garden originally lacked structure and interest. Our client wanted to breathe life back into the space and asked us to create something more engaging – a garden that was practical for everyday use but also stylish and unique.
The main focus was to:
- Provide a raised decked area directly off the house for seating and entertaining.
- Create pathways and lawns with flowing curves rather than straight lines.
- Incorporate hard landscaping features that gave the garden character.
- Use a mix of materials that balanced warmth, texture, and durability.
The build and materials
We began with extensive groundworks, preparing foundations for both the timber and stone elements of the project. From there, the transformation took shape step by step:
- Raised decking: We constructed a large timber deck in smooth treated boards, raised to meet the house level. This provided an instant extension of the indoor living space.
- Rendered planters: Twin rendered planters were installed at the front of the deck, painted in a soft contemporary grey. These added structure while also creating natural divisions between the deck and lawn.
- Curved pathways and lawns: Using precision-cut stone setts, we edged out a new sweeping pathway design that flowed the length of the garden, replacing the previous boxy layout with softer, more dynamic shapes.
- Feature paved circle: At the far end, we installed a paved circular feature in grey sandstone. This gave the garden a destination point and worked beautifully as a secondary seating area.
- Vertical timber posts: One of the standout features of this project was a series of vertical timber posts set into a bed of decorative cobbles. These posts provided height, rhythm, and a sense of division without closing off the garden.
- New turf: Finally, fresh lawn was laid to complete the soft landscaping and tie all areas together.
The finished result
The finished garden is a striking blend of straight lines and sweeping curves, all brought together through thoughtful use of natural materials.
- The decking provides a practical, warm-toned platform for outdoor dining.
- The planters and timber posts give structure and modern design interest.
- The curved pathway leads the eye through the garden, encouraging exploration.
- The paved circle at the end creates balance and a place to pause.
- The new lawn adds softness and contrast against the hard landscaping.
What was once a flat, unremarkable garden is now a layered, versatile, and highly usable space – perfect for family life and entertaining alike.

Got Questions? We've got answers
-
Oak is durable, long-lasting, and naturally beautiful, making it an excellent choice for a timeless outdoor structure.
-
Indian sandstone is durable, naturally slip-resistant, and easy to maintain, making it an excellent choice for patios and pathways. Its textured surface provides secure footing in all weather conditions, while its dense composition ensures long-term resilience against wear and erosion.
Available in a range of warm, earthy tones and subtle variations, Indian sandstone adds natural character and charm to any outdoor space. Over time, it weathers beautifully, developing a soft, aged patina that enhances its visual appeal. With occasional cleaning and sealing, it remains a practical, stylish, and long-lasting paving solution.
-
Oak weathers naturally over time, developing a silver-grey patina, which many homeowners find appealing and in keeping with natural surroundings. However, if you prefer to maintain its rich, golden hue, it can be treated with specialist oils to protect against UV exposure and moisture. Regular cleaning and reapplication will help preserve its original colour.
Climbing plants, such as wisteria, roses, or jasmine, can enhance the pergola’s charm but may require occasional pruning and training to prevent overgrowth and maintain the structure’s integrity. Using gentle ties and supports can help guide growth while ensuring the pergola remains a stunning focal point in your garden.
-
Lighting enhances ambience and safety, making the pergola and patio usable in the evenings while highlighting key garden features.
