A Sunken Seating Area with Timeless Elegance

Cowen Landscapes recently had the pleasure of designing and building a stunning sunken seating area in Maidstone, Kent. The goal was to create an outdoor space that seamlessly blended with the property’s extension while offering a stylish and functional place to relax.
Blending Indoors with Outdoors
To ensure a harmonious transition between the house and garden, we used reclaimed bricks from the property itself to craft the patio’s surround. This thoughtful detail tied the new space into the home’s existing architecture, giving it a cohesive and timeless feel.
For the raised borders, we introduced a prairie-style planting scheme, featuring soft pinks, blues, and whites alongside ornamental grasses. This combination ensures the garden remains vibrant and inviting throughout the seasons.
Sculpting with Circles
The client envisioned a unique design with intersecting circular porcelain patios as the centrepiece. These elegant curves guide the eye through the space while providing defined areas for seating and socialising. The result? A striking yet balanced outdoor layout that feels natural and welcoming.
A Pergola for Sun-Soaked Moments
To make the most of the garden’s sunniest corner, we installed a curved oak pergola over reclaimed sandstone paving. This carefully chosen feature not only adds height and structure but also provides an inviting spot for entertaining or unwinding in the shade.
A Seamless Blend of Structure and Nature
Creating a garden that feels both structured and organic is all about balance. For this project, we combined crisp porcelain patios with the warmth of reclaimed materials to ensure the new space felt like a natural extension of the home.
The brick surround, sourced directly from the house, helps anchor the sunken seating area within the existing architecture. Meanwhile, the curved oak pergola adds a sense of intimacy, creating a sheltered spot that’s perfect for gathering, whatever the season.
With its mix of hard landscaping and soft planting, this space is a true retreat, effortlessly blending timeless materials with modern design.
