This project in 20 seconds
In January 2025, our Maintenance Team took on a major hedge renovation in Wateringbury. The goal was to rejuvenate an enormous, uneven Taxus (yew) hedge that had outgrown its space. With precision pruning, experience, and patience, we’ve reshaped one side of the hedge, setting the groundwork for a beautifully balanced, healthy structure that will continue to thrive for years to come.
The Challenge
Standing over 15 feet tall in places, this mature yew hedge had grown dense and uneven, making it both difficult to manage and visually heavy. The challenge was to reduce it substantially while preserving its health and ensuring it would regenerate evenly. Large-scale hedge renovation requires a careful approach — removing too much too soon risks damaging the plant’s structure and long-term vitality.
The Solution
Working methodically and with great care, we reduced one full side of the hedge by around six feet, cutting back right to the trunk in places to create a solid framework for new growth.
Taxus is an exceptional species for this kind of rejuvenation work — its ability to regenerate from old wood makes it ideal for gradual renovation. Our plan is to allow this side to recover fully through the growing season before tackling the opposite side next year, ensuring the hedge stays balanced and vigorous throughout the process.
The Result
Already, the hedge has been transformed. It now has a clean, structural look that opens up the garden and provides a strong foundation for future shaping. Over the coming seasons, fresh green growth will fill out the reduced sections, creating a neat, dense barrier once again.
This project is a brilliant example of skilled maintenance and horticultural understanding in action — taking time to work with the plant’s natural growth cycle for a lasting, healthy result. A huge well done to the team for a meticulous job carried out in winter conditions.

Got Questions? We've got answers
-
Late winter to early spring is ideal for yew hedge renovation. At this time, the hedge is dormant, reducing stress on the plant while allowing new growth to emerge strongly once warmer weather arrives.
-
Yew hedges are extremely resilient and can be cut back hard, even to old wood, as long as the work is done correctly. Our team typically reduces overgrown hedges gradually, one side at a time, to ensure healthy regrowth.
-
After heavy reduction, a yew hedge can take one to two growing seasons to fully fill out again. During that time, regular maintenance, watering, and balanced feeding help stimulate even, dense regrowth.
