Maidstone Composite Decking & Aluminium Balustrade
A raised composite decking installation with sleek aluminium balustrades, creating a safe, stylish and low-maintenance outdoor living space.
This project replaced tired timber decking with a more contemporary finish, giving the clients a practical area for relaxing, dining and enjoying the garden.
This project in 20 seconds
This underused raised area has been transformed into a modern outdoor living space that connects beautifully with the garden.
We replaced the old timber decking with composite boards and installed powder-coated aluminium balustrades for safety without blocking the view.
The result is a clean, contemporary terrace that is comfortable to use, easy to maintain and built to last.
The Brief
The clients wanted to transform an underused raised area into a practical outdoor living space that could be enjoyed throughout the year.
The existing timber decking had reached the end of its lifespan and no longer suited the style of the property. With a change in level between the house and garden, safety was also an important consideration.
The brief was to create a modern, low-maintenance deck that connected the home with the garden, while keeping the views open and the finished space comfortable for seating, dining and relaxing.
The solution
Following a detailed consultation, we designed and installed a new composite decking area complete with powder-coated aluminium balustrades.
Composite decking was chosen for its durability, slip-resistant surface options and minimal maintenance requirements. Unlike traditional timber decking, composite boards do not require regular staining or painting and are resistant to rot, splitting and warping.
To provide safety without compromising the view, we installed slim-line aluminium balustrades around the perimeter of the deck.
The black powder-coated finish gives the space a crisp, contemporary look, while the wire detailing keeps the view open across the lawn, planting and wider garden.
The Construction Process
The project began with the removal and responsible disposal of the existing timber decking structure.
We then constructed a new pressure-treated timber subframe, ensuring the correct support, ventilation and longevity for the composite decking above. This stage is vital, as the strength and performance of a raised deck depends heavily on what sits beneath the boards.
The composite boards were installed with hidden fixings to create a clean, uninterrupted finish across the surface.
Once the decking was in place, the aluminium balustrade system was carefully fitted and aligned. Particular attention was paid to consistent spacing, secure fixing points and a neat transition between the decking, steps and access areas.
Why composite decking?
Composite decking is a strong choice for clients who want the look and feel of decking without the ongoing upkeep of timber.
It works particularly well for raised seating areas, outdoor dining spaces and gardens where a smart, consistent finish is important.
Key benefits include:
- Low maintenance, with no annual painting or staining
- Resistant to rot, warping and splitting
- Long lifespan compared with traditional timber decking
- Slip-resistant surface options available
- A wide range of colours and finishes
- A clean, contemporary appearance
For this project, the soft grey boards gave the terrace a calm, modern feel that sits comfortably alongside the planting, garden furniture and black balustrades.
Why Aluminium Balustrades?
Aluminium was a great fit for this project because it is strong, durable and low maintenance. The slim posts and horizontal wire detailing create a secure boundary while still allowing the clients to enjoy views across the garden.
Key benefits include:
- Contemporary and elegant appearance
- Strong, durable and corrosion resistant
- Minimal maintenance requirements
- Safety without heavily obstructing views
- Powder-coated finishes available to complement the design
The black finish also helps frame the deck beautifully, adding contrast against the pale composite boards and surrounding planting.
The Result
The completed project has transformed the outdoor space into a modern extension of the home.
The combination of composite decking and aluminium balustrades provides a stylish and practical solution that will require very little maintenance in the years ahead.
The elevated deck now offers a safe and comfortable area for entertaining, dining and relaxing, while making the most of the garden views.
What makes the space work so well is the balance between clean modern materials and established planting. The decking provides a calm, usable surface, the balustrades add safety and definition, and the garden still feels open, colourful and inviting.

Got Questions? We've got answers
Composite decking is a popular alternative to timber because it is low maintenance, durable and resistant to rot, splitting and warping. It does not need annual staining or painting, making it a practical choice for busy households.
Composite decking is generally designed with outdoor use in mind, and many boards have slip-resistant surface options. Like any outdoor surface, it still benefits from occasional cleaning to remove leaves, algae or debris.
A well-installed composite deck can last for many years, especially when it is fitted onto a properly constructed subframe with good ventilation and drainage. The exact lifespan depends on the product chosen and the conditions of the garden.
Aluminium balustrades provide a strong, durable and contemporary safety barrier. They are particularly useful on raised decking where there is a change in level, helping to make the space safer without making the garden feel closed in.
Yes. Composite boards are available in a range of colours and finishes, while aluminium balustrades can often be powder-coated to complement the property. This allows the deck to feel like a considered extension of the home rather than an add-on.
