Planting That Brings a Space to Life: A Layered Garden in Maidstone

A layered planting design in Maidstone breathes new life into this space, combining trees, shrubs and perennials of varying heights, textures and colours to create depth and year‑round interest.

This project in 20 seconds

The final stage of this newly built garden saw the planting installed – the moment that truly transforms a landscape. While the structure and hard landscaping define the framework, it’s the planting that softens the lines, adds texture and movement, and creates the inviting atmosphere that makes a garden feel alive.

From structure to softness

Following completion of the main build earlier this year, our team returned to complete the planting. This is always the stage that changes everything – where the bones of the design are complemented by natural layers of colour, texture, and form.

The contrast between the crisp lines of the pergola, raised planters, and gravel beds, and the lush green planting creates an immediate sense of balance.

Working with light and shade

This garden presented an exciting challenge, with distinct areas of deep shade and bright sunlight. Rather than seeing this as a constraint, it allowed us to curate a diverse planting palette – shade-tolerant ferns, hostas, and groundcovers in the cooler, more sheltered zone, and sun-loving Mediterranean species like lavender, grasses, and herbs where the light pours in.

The result is a planting scheme that feels dynamic and layered, with textures and tones that shift beautifully throughout the day.

The transformation

The completed planting softens every edge and draws the eye through the space. Under the dappled canopy of mature olive trees, the gravel beds are now punctuated with bursts of foliage and gentle colour.

This garden has evolved from a constructed space into a living, breathing landscape – one that feels natural, established, and full of character.

Why this stage matters

Planting is often the most rewarding part of any project. It’s the point where all the planning, design, and construction come together to create something that feels complete. Every leaf and stem contributes to the mood of the garden – whether calm and minimal or rich and vibrant – and over time, the space will only continue to mature and improve.

The result

A beautifully layered garden that balances structure and softness, shade and light, and modern design with natural charm. With thoughtful planting choices and careful placement, this space now feels alive – a place to relax, entertain, and simply enjoy being outdoors.

Got Questions? We've got answers

A layered garden design uses plants of varying heights, textures and colours arranged in tiers to create depth and interest. Taller trees and shrubs form the upper layer, mid-sized plants fill the middle, and low-growing groundcovers or perennials complete the foreground.

This project combined ornamental trees, flowering shrubs, herbaceous perennials and groundcovers. Shade-tolerant ferns and hostas fill the cooler areas, while sun-loving lavender, grasses and herbs thrive in brighter spots.

The daffodils typically bloom from late February to April, depending on the weather, offering a spectacular early-spring display.

The layered garden installation, including soil preparation, planting and finishing touches, took around two weeks. Planting often takes place after the hard landscaping is finished to ensure optimal conditions.

Yes. Layered planting can be scaled down for small gardens by choosing compact plant varieties and using vertical elements like trellises or pergolas to maximise space.

We offer tailored maintenance packages to ensure your garden continues to flourish. These can include seasonal pruning, fertilisation, and general upkeep based on your needs.
