This project in 20 seconds
This project shows that “just a square patio” can still completely change how a garden feels and functions.
The customer’s gravel area was replaced with a large Dijon Limestone patio, creating a brighter, more usable space directly outside the home.
With clean lines, natural stone variation and built-in drainage, the finished patio is simple, elegant and made to last.
From loose gravel to a usable patio space
Before work began, this part of the garden was mainly a loose gravel area beside the house. While gravel can be useful in some settings, it was not giving the customer the most comfortable or practical space to enjoy.
The area had the potential to become a much more inviting extension of the home. It was positioned directly outside the property, close to the doors and main living space, making it ideal for a proper patio.
Our work focused on creating a solid, level and attractive surface that would make the garden easier to use day to day. The new patio now provides a defined outdoor area for seating, entertaining and moving around the house and garden more comfortably.
Careful preparation beneath the surface
As with any good patio installation, much of the important work happens before the paving is laid.
The existing surface was prepared to create the correct foundation for the new limestone patio. This included clearing the working area, setting levels and compacting the base so that the finished surface would be stable and long lasting.
The during photos show the team working through the preparation stages, including the use of compaction equipment to create a firm base. This stage is essential on a large patio, where even small issues with levels or movement can become noticeable over time.
By taking the time to prepare the area properly, the finished patio has the clean, even appearance the customer wanted, while also being built for regular use over the years ahead.
Dijon Limestone with natural warmth and variation
The customer chose Dijon Limestone, a beautiful natural stone with soft beige, grey and warm buff tones. It is a great choice for a patio where the aim is to create something elegant without it feeling too stark or modern.
One of the strengths of natural limestone is the variation from slab to slab. Across a large area, this gives the surface depth and character, rather than a flat or uniform appearance. The Dijon tones also sit comfortably beside the brickwork, white render and darker doors of the property.
The paving was laid in a clean pattern with consistent joints, helping the patio feel ordered and well balanced. The overall effect is simple, but not plain – exactly the kind of finish that suits a quality garden space.
Drainage built into the patio design
A patio needs to do more than look good on the day it is finished. It also needs to deal properly with rainwater and the conditions of the garden.
As part of this project, we installed the associated drainage so that the new paved area would perform as well as it looks. This was especially important because the patio sits close to the house, where water management needs to be considered carefully.
Good drainage helps protect the patio, reduce standing water and keep the space more usable throughout the year. It is one of those details that may not always be the first thing people notice, but it makes a big difference to the long-term quality of the installation.
This is where a professionally installed patio stands apart from a surface-level makeover.
Clean edges, simple lines and a quality finish
The finished patio shows how effective a simple shape can be when the details are handled well.
The square layout gives the garden a strong, practical outdoor area, while the brick edging provides a smart border that ties in with the house. The clean paving lines keep the space looking calm and organised, and the pale limestone helps brighten the area around the property.
This was not a project that needed complicated curves or multiple levels to make an impact. Instead, it relied on good materials, good preparation and careful workmanship from start to finish.
For the customer, the result is a generous patio that feels easy to use, easy to furnish and easy to enjoy – a smart upgrade that makes the garden feel much more complete.

Limestone is a popular choice for patios because it has a natural, elegant look with subtle colour variation across each slab. Dijon Limestone in particular gives a softer, warmer finish than many grey paving options, making it well suited to both traditional and modern homes.
Yes. Even a square or rectangular patio needs the right levels, falls, base preparation and drainage to perform properly. A simple design often makes the quality of the installation even more important, because the lines and finish are so visible.
Dijon Limestone is a natural stone, so each slab has its own tone, texture and markings. Porcelain is manufactured, giving a more consistent finish. Limestone is often chosen by customers who want a softer, more natural appearance.
Not always in the same way, but drainage should always be considered. Patios close to the house, large paved areas and gardens with existing water issues may need specific drainage solutions to help manage rainwater properly.
Yes. The choice of paving, jointing, edging and layout can all be tailored to suit the style of the home. Natural stone patios work especially well where the aim is to create a space that feels established rather than overly modern.
