A Lenham Garden Designed to Grow With the Family
A family-friendly garden transformation in Lenham, designed around everyday use, low maintenance and growing together.
The finished space includes artificial grass for year-round play, raised vegetable beds for home growing, and a cleaner layout that makes the garden easier for the whole family to enjoy.
This project in 20 seconds
This Lenham garden was redesigned to work better for a young family.
The old space was cleared and reshaped to create a practical artificial lawn, raised vegetable beds, gravel areas and new planting.
The result is a low-maintenance garden where children can play, adults can relax, and the family can grow fruit, vegetables and herbs together.
Creating a garden for everyday family life
When people think about a garden transformation, they often picture the finished lawn, paving or planting. Those details matter, but the best gardens do something more meaningful. They change how people use their outdoor space.
For this project in Lenham, the clients wanted a garden that would be practical, easy to maintain and enjoyable for a young family.
The existing layout was not making the most of the available area. Parts of the garden had become overgrown and difficult to use, and the space needed a clearer structure.
The aim was to create a garden that worked for everyone – somewhere children could play, adults could relax, and the whole family could spend more time outside.
Preparing the space properly
Before the new garden could be built, the existing space needed to be cleared and prepared.
Overgrown areas were removed, the garden was stripped back, and the team began shaping the new layout. This preparation stage is essential because a clean, stable base allows the finished garden to perform properly and look good for years to come.
Once the area had been cleared, the new structure could be introduced, including the raised sleeper beds, gravel areas and artificial lawn preparation.
This stage may not be the most glamorous part of a project, but it is what makes the finished result possible.
This approach works particularly well in a Japanese-inspired garden, where routes, views and pauses are all part of the experience.
Raised vegetable beds for growing, learning and eating
One of the most important features in this garden is the series of raised vegetable beds.
They give the family a dedicated place to grow vegetables, herbs and fruit in a way that is manageable and easy to access. Raised beds improve the growing area, help organise planting and make it more comfortable for both adults and children to get involved.
For children, growing food can be a brilliant way to learn. They begin to understand patience, responsibility and where food really comes from. Seeds take time to germinate. Plants need watering. Weather matters. Insects have a role to play.
There is something very special about a child picking tomatoes or pulling up a carrot they helped grow themselves.
Artificial grass for year-round play
For a busy family, artificial grass was a practical choice.
It creates a clean, usable area that can be enjoyed throughout the year, without the regular mowing and maintenance needed for a natural lawn. Children can run, play football, build dens or simply spend more time outside, even after wet weather.
The artificial lawn also gives the garden a bright, tidy finish. It forms the main open area of the design and creates a clear contrast with the timber raised beds, gravel and planting.
This part of the garden is all about usability – a space that looks good, but also works hard every day.
Timber sleepers, gravel and a tidy garden structure
The raised timber beds give the garden structure and warmth.
They run along the fence line, making good use of the boundary and freeing up the centre of the garden for the lawn. The stepped design helps the beds work with the shape of the space, while giving the family plenty of growing room.
Gravel areas add a practical, low-maintenance finish around the garden building and side areas. This helps keep the space tidy and easy to move through, while also improving the overall layout.
Together, the lawn, sleepers, gravel and planting create a garden that feels organised without being overly formal.
Planting with purpose
The planting in this garden has been chosen to be both attractive and useful.
Alongside decorative plants such as lavender and marigolds, the raised beds include edible planting for the family to enjoy. Peppers, tomatoes, lettuce and herbs can all bring a sense of discovery to a garden, especially for children.
The planting will also encourage more life into the space. Flowers can attract pollinators, herbs add scent, and edible crops give the family something to care for and look forward to.
This is not just planting for appearance. It is planting that invites the family to take part.
A garden that will keep giving back
This garden will continue to develop as the family uses it.
The artificial lawn provides the instant practical benefit of a clean play area, while the raised beds will change with the seasons. There will be new crops to try, flowers to enjoy, and plenty of opportunities for children to learn through doing.
Gardens have always been about much more than plants. They are places where families spend time together, where children build memories, where birthdays are celebrated and where quiet evenings are enjoyed after a long day.
This Lenham garden now has the structure to support all of that.
A thought from Matt
“Some of my happiest childhood memories involve being outside. Building dens, getting muddy and watching things grow.
If we can create gardens that encourage today’s children to spend a little less time looking at screens and a little more time growing vegetables, exploring nature and making memories with their family, then we’ve done far more than build another garden.
We’ve created a space that will keep giving back for years to come.”

Got Questions? We've got answers
Yes. Artificial grass can be a practical option for busy family gardens because it provides a clean, usable surface throughout the year and does not need mowing. It is especially useful where children need a reliable play area.
Raised vegetable beds make growing food more manageable. They improve access, help organise crops, provide better control over soil quality and make it easier for children and adults to get involved.
Yes. Raised beds are ideal for family gardening because they create a clear, easy-to-reach growing space. Children can help with watering, planting, harvesting and learning how food grows.
Absolutely. Low-maintenance does not have to mean plain. Artificial grass, raised beds, gravel, planting and timber features can all work together to create a garden that is both practical and attractive.
Yes. With the right layout, even a smaller garden can include play space, planting, seating, storage and growing areas. The key is designing the garden around how the family wants to use it.
