Kendal Grey Sandstone Patio and Pathway in Maidstone
Crisp new sandstone paving, a freshly laid lawn, and neat planted borders combine in this Maidstone garden refresh.
This project in 20 seconds
A neat Kendal Grey sandstone installation in Maidstone, creating a practical patio area, stepping-stone pathway and softened planting detail.
Led by Zain and the Cowen Landscapes small works team, this project has given the garden a smarter, more connected feel while keeping the overall look calm and natural.
A more connected garden layout
This Maidstone project focused on improving the way the garden could be used and moved through.
The new Kendal Grey sandstone patio creates a smart, practical surface around the garden buildings, replacing what appears to have been a less defined area with a cleaner and more usable finish.
The patio also links neatly with the lawn and new pathway, helping the different parts of the garden feel more connected. Rather than feeling separate, the summerhouse, shed, lawn and seating areas now work together as one considered space.
The grey tones of the sandstone sit comfortably alongside the pale garden buildings, timber fencing and surrounding greenery.

Kendal Grey sandstone with a natural finish
Kendal Grey sandstone was used to give the project a smart but natural finish.
The stone has soft grey colouring and subtle surface variation, which helps it feel more characterful than a plain concrete slab while still keeping the overall look clean and understated.
The paving was laid in a mixed-size pattern, creating movement across the patio without making the space feel too busy. Darker jointing adds definition between the slabs and gives the finished surface a crisp, well-structured look.
This choice of material works particularly well in a garden where the aim is to create something practical, attractive and in keeping with the existing setting.
Stepping stones and planting to soften the space
The project was finished with stepping stones across the lawn and a small amount of planting to soften the hard landscaping.
The pathway creates a clear route through the garden without the need for a full paved path. This keeps more lawn in place, while still making the garden easier and more enjoyable to use.
Planting was also added to bring softness, colour and texture back into the space. The lavender-style planting and shrubs help connect the patio to the surrounding borders, so the new paving feels settled rather than separate.
It is a simple detail, but it makes a big difference to the finished result.
Another quality small works project led by Zain
This was another successful installation from Zain and the Cowen Landscapes small works team.
Zain headed up the work and continued to show the confidence, care and attention to detail that have developed over the last few years. Seeing team members take ownership of projects and keep improving their standards is something we are genuinely proud of.
The finished garden now has a practical patio, a clear route across the lawn and planting that helps bring everything together.
A smart, tidy and well-executed project completed by the Cowen Landscapes team in Maidstone.

Yes. Sandstone is a popular patio material because it has a natural appearance, attractive colour variation and a more characterful finish than many manufactured paving options. It works well in both traditional and modern gardens.
Kendal Grey sandstone usually has soft grey tones with natural variation across the slabs. This gives it a calm, understated look that pairs well with timber fencing, brickwork, planting and pale garden buildings.
Yes. Stepping stones are a good option when you want a clear route through the garden without installing a full solid path. They help maintain a softer lawn feel while still improving access.
Planting helps soften the edges of a patio and makes the hard landscaping feel more settled within the garden. It can add colour, scent, movement and seasonal interest around the paved areas.
