Millboard Composite Decking Installation for a Returning Customer

A smart Millboard composite decking installation completed by the Cowen Landscapes Small Works team for a returning customer.

The new deck creates a clean, low-maintenance seating area within a shaded part of the garden, finished with the care and detailing expected from Zain, Nath and the team.

This project in 20 seconds

This smaller garden improvement shows how much difference a well-built deck can make.

The customer wanted a practical outdoor seating area with the look of timber but without the ongoing upkeep. Millboard composite decking was chosen for its realistic woodgrain finish, slip-resistant surface and low-maintenance qualities.

Built by Zain and Nath during one of the hottest spells of the year, the finished deck is simple, elegant and made to be enjoyed for years.

A returning customer and a new garden feature

It is always rewarding to be invited back by a returning customer.

For this project, the client wanted to improve another part of their garden with a practical, attractive and easy-to-maintain seating area. The chosen spot already had a sense of privacy and shade, making it ideal for a new deck.

Although this was a smaller installation, it still needed careful setting out and a high-quality finish. The aim was to create a clean platform that sat neatly within the lawn and existing planting, without feeling overcomplicated.

The finished deck now gives the customer a defined outdoor space that can be used for seating, relaxing or enjoying a quieter corner of the garden.

Building the deck from the frame up

A good deck starts with what sits beneath the boards.

The Small Works team began by preparing the area and constructing a new timber subframe. This provided the support, structure and level base needed for the Millboard decking to be installed correctly.

Even on a compact project, the subframe is a crucial part of the build. It affects how the deck feels underfoot, how well it performs over time and how neat the finished surface looks.

Zain and Nath took care of the installation, continuing to show the workmanship and professionalism we expect across every Cowen Landscapes project.

Millboard composite decking with a realistic timber finish

Millboard was chosen because it offers the appearance of natural timber with far less ongoing maintenance.

The boards have a realistic woodgrain effect, giving the deck warmth and texture while avoiding many of the issues associated with traditional timber decking. Millboard does not need regular staining or painting and is designed to resist rot, splintering, algae and weathering.

For homeowners who want a smart outdoor seating area without a heavy maintenance routine, it is a strong choice.

In this project, the pale board colour helps brighten the shaded area, while the natural grain detail gives the finished deck a soft, attractive appearance.

Clean edges and careful finishing details

The finish on this deck is deliberately simple, but the details matter.

The boards were laid cleanly across the surface, with a picture-frame style border helping to define the edges. The neat corner detailing gives the deck a more refined look and makes it feel like a complete feature rather than just a flat platform.

The wraparound fascia also helps the deck sit cleanly within the lawn, hiding the structure beneath and creating a polished final appearance.

This is where careful workmanship makes a visible difference, especially on a smaller deck where every edge, line and joint is easy to see.

A shaded space built during a hot spell

This project was completed during one of the hottest spells of the year.

Fortunately, this part of the garden offered welcome shade, making conditions more comfortable than many of the exposed sites the team had been working on recently.

During periods of high heat, looking after the team is always a priority. Regular breaks, plenty of water and adapting how we work all help keep everyone safe while maintaining the standard of finish our customers expect.

The shaded setting also gives the finished deck a relaxed feel, with dappled light across the boards and planting around the edges.

Quality work from Zain, Nath and the Small Works team

This project was completed by Zain and Nath, who continue to deliver the high standards of workmanship and professionalism Cowen Landscapes is known for.

We are proud of the way they approached this installation, from setting out the frame to finishing the Millboard boards and edges. Their care and consistency show through in the final result.

A big thank you also goes to our returning customer for choosing Cowen Landscapes again. Repeat business is never taken for granted, and it is always a pleasure to be trusted with another part of a client’s garden.

Got Questions? We've got answers

Millboard is a premium composite decking product that gives the appearance of natural timber while requiring very little maintenance. It is designed to resist rot, splintering, algae and weathering, making it a strong choice for outdoor seating areas.

Millboard decking is designed with slip resistance in mind, including in wet conditions. As with any outdoor surface, occasional cleaning helps keep the deck looking good and performing well.

No. One of the main benefits of composite decking is that it does not need regular painting, staining or sealing in the way timber decking often does.

Yes. Composite decking works very well for smaller seating areas, platforms and quiet garden corners. A compact deck can still make a big difference to how a garden is used.

The subframe supports the decking boards and helps determine how stable and long-lasting the finished deck will be. A properly built subframe is essential for a good-quality installation.
